Theme: Addressing health inequalities and disadvantage for individuals and communities

Herbert Paulischin is Executive Director of the Austrian Association of Social Workers, a position he has held since 2008. Prior to that he was President of the Association from 1990-2007.  He also is a member of national social workers organisations in Bulgaria and Romania.  Mr Paulischin began his social work career in 1976 in a leisure centre for young people and in 1980 as director of a counselling centre and a shelter for single mothers. From 1985 to 2002, he specialized in the area of child protection, completed training in systemic family therapy and developed social support to children and their families in cases of violence and sexual exploitation. On these issues and ethics of social work, he also taught at the local University School of Social work.

Over more than two decades, Mr Paulischin has been active as a social worker at the international level. Starting with IFSW Global Conference in Washington 1992,  Herbert Paulischin has represented the Austrian Association in IFSW Delegates Meeting.  He has previously worked as team leader in a project (two years) funded by the European Union on “Child Welfare Reform ” in Bulgaria. He was involved in several long-term projects in Romania including:  reform of penitentiaries for juvenile offenders; access to labour market for people with disabilities; development of social economy models for socially excluded groups and ethnic minorities/Roma. In 2013 he contributed as key expert to a project aiming to improve the system of foster care in Croatia.

Between 1998 – 2002 Mr Paulischin served as European President of IFSW (Vice President IFSW global).  Since 2007, he has spent most of his time living and working in Romania supporting the strategic development of social work.
